Upperton Limited obtains UK Government grant to fund nanotechnology research
Nottingham, United Kingdom, 3 March 2009 – Upperton Limited today announced that it has been awarded a UK Government Grant for Research and Development (GRD). The award will be used to fund an 18-month research programme evaluating the potential for recombinant protein nanoparticles in the enhanced delivery of cancer drugs.
The project will use Upperton’s proprietary rP-nano™ technology to create precisely sized protein nanoparticles from recombinant proteins such as recombinant albumin (Recombumin®), produced by its partner, Novozymes Biopharma. The protein nanoparticles will be loaded with cytotoxic agents, and their ability to enhance the delivery to tumour cells will be assessed. A range of tumour cell types will be investigated by external specialist research centres that have suitable models available.
This research study supports Upperton’s initial objective to focus its rP-nano™ technology in the oncology field. The Company anticipates that other applications for the technology will quickly follow, particularly in fields such as enhanced oral delivery, vaccine formulation and the delivery of the new generation of RNAi drugs.
“We are pleased to obtain this research grant at what is an important stage of the development of our technology'' said Richard Johnson, founding Director of Upperton. We believe that the data generated from this programme will significantly advance our understanding of the rP-nano™ drug delivery platform and its use in enhanced drug delivery. It is hoped that the success of this project will attract potential partners with an interest in commercialising the technology.
Upperton is seeking collaborators interested in exploiting its rP-nano™ drug delivery platform. It is anticipated that the Upperton technology platform will add value across a wide a range of pharmaceutical applications.
