Upperton Receives UK Government Award to Fund Lung Imaging Programme

3rd January 2001

Upperton Limited announces that it has been granted a UK Government SMART award. The research award will be used to fund an exploratory programme seeking to develop novel contrast agents to enhance imaging procedures for the lung.

Nottingham, UK: Upperton Limited, an emerging research and development company, is to receive UK Government funding to initiate a novel research programme in the field of lung contrast imaging.

The SMART award will be used to fund research aimed at exploiting the company's novel microparticle technology. The goal will be to develop a dry powder formulation of an x-ray contrast agent that will be capable of enhancing both conventional x-ray and CT images. It is envisaged that the contrast agent will be inhaled as a dry powder.

The programme will run alongside an existing study investigating the contrast enhancement of lung images during MRI procedures.

Founding Director, Dr Richard Johnson, was delighted on the successful outcome of the grant application whilst accepting that a number of technical hurdles will need to be overcome during the study.

Upperton has a number of research projects in progress at its Nottingham laboratories and is seeking research partners to accelerate the exploitation of the company's unique microparticle technology.
