Nottingham, 14 March 2008 – R5 Pharmaceuticals has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Upperton Ltd meaning it now offers spray-drying research, development, GMP and clinical manufacture under one roof.

The deal means that R5, which offers an integrated approach to pharmaceutical development from formulation to manufacture, now provides onsite in its GMP facility, drug delivery solutions for controlled release, poorly soluble compounds and respiratory products.

Richard Johnson, CEO, Upperton Limited comments: “Our expertise is highly specialised and the fit with R5 Pharmaceuticals was obvious. We are looking forward to working with them, as they advise and implement the development of even the most challenging molecules to meet their clients’ needs.”

Paul Titley, CEO, R5 Pharmaceuticals, explains: “Increasingly, customers are looking for insight and expertise, but also flexibility and choice in developing the best formulations to bring a new product to market.

“R5 has combined industry expertise of well over 100 years, together with the most up to date facilities and the recently approved CRF. This strategic deal is a great fit for us and Upperton, meaning both companies can add to its client offering without increasing overheads to the benefit of all!”

R5 Pharmaceuticals, an integrated formulation and development company, announced the launch of its comprehensive range of contract services in drug development for the pharma and biotech industry in March 2007 and has already built a client portfolio with customers from the USA as well as EU and non-EU countries.

The company, based on the BioCity campus, Nottingham, offers an efficient and integrated approach to pharmaceutical development, from drug formulation and delivery technology through to full scale manufacture. Led by a uniquely experienced management team, R5 Pharmaceuticals provides appropriate solutions for the development of safe and effective pharmaceutical materials to be used in clinical studies.

Upperton Ltd is a privately owned, Nottingham-based company supplying novel particles to the pharmaceutical and other industries. Its core technologies include specialised spray drying processes that can be applied to customers’ products to enhance delivery and performance. Importantly, its services mean that customers can assess the potential of spray drying for products without the expense of investing in equipment.
