Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS) Analyser

A new automated Q5000 SA Dynamic Vapour Sorption analyser (TA Instruments) has been installed in Upperton’s analytical laboratory.

The Q5000 is designed for high performance sorption analysis of materials under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity.

Small particle powder formulations, for example those produced for inhalation delivery are often prone to moisture uptake, particularly at higher relative humidities.

This uptake can be influenced by a number of factors including the API itself, choice of excipients and particle size.

Using DVS Analysis allows Upperton to :

  • Determine the hygroscopicity of API formulations, so that we can select suitable excipients and recommend packaging and storage conditions of final products.
  • Detect and study the water-induced recrystallization of pharmaceutical formulations
  • Investigate a spray dried material’s response to changes in relative humidity
  • In short, DVS is a powerful analytical tool that can assist in powder formulation development to achieve optimal storage and handling properties.
