Applications of Spray Drying
Spray drying is extensively used to enhance the formulation and delivery of drugs and biologicals in a wide range of applications.
To explain these applications in more detail, click on the following links to learn how spray drying can be used to solve your formulation problems. Each link takes you to a short (8-10 minute) presentation
Application Note 1: Improving the solubility / bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs

Poor aqueous solubility is a major issue for many new APIs. Poorly soluble drugs generally have low bioavailability, decreased efficacy and higher development costs. Spray drying can be used to transform your crystalline API into a stable amorphous material dispersed within a solid polymeric matrix. When properly formulated, solid dispersions have excellent shelf-life stability, and dramatically enhanced drug solubility. Bioavailability is often orders of magnitude greater than that of the purely crystalline drug form.

Application Note 2: Spray drying of biological molecules

Until recently, many biological formulations are formulated and stabilised by freeze-drying. However, spray drying is being increasingly used to produce dry powder formulations. Even the most
temperature-sensitive biological molecules, such as proteins, peptides and monoclonal antibodies have been spray dried successfully with little or no loss of activity.

Application Note 3: Particle Engineering

Spray drying can be used to create microparticles with specific physical properties to enhance their delivery performance. Applications include oral, pulmonary and intravenous administration. By adjusting the spray drying conditions used it is possible to control particle size, morphology and bulk density which in turn can have significant impact on the delivery performance of the drug in question.
