Upperton Pharma Solutions is a Nottingham-based CDMO that specialises in the formulation and spray drying of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products, providing a complete service from early-stage feasibility through to development and scale-up (including GMP clinical manufacture). As part of our rapid expansion, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Formulation Development Scientist to join the team.

The Role
Working as part of the Pharmaceutical Sciences team based at Nottingham Science and Technology Park site in Nottingham, you will be part of a busy group working on client and internal scientific research and development projects. Projects are based on many different therapeutics including biologics and small molecules, and delivery routes including pulmonary, nasal and oral.

As a Senior Formulation Development Scientist, you will be directly involved in undertaking practical and written work to achieve project goals and milestones. R&D projects span from early feasibility to formulation development, with techniques including spray drying, granulation and tableting, and characterisation of solutions, powders and dosage forms. The Pharmaceutical Sciences team is focussed on delivery of high-quality scientific research for clients, with the team leading on formulation development and project reporting.

You will be required to prepare and present data to clients, and work with the analytical and manufacturing teams as required to meet project deliverables to a high standard. You will be expected to support the training and development of scientific staff, helping them to achieve project goals and milestone and support their personal development.

The role will suit an individual with strong problem-solving skills, excellent written and oral communication and superior technical knowledge of some aspects of pharmaceutical development. Experience in solid dosage formulation development and scale up is essential, with a good knowledge of the transfer of formulations and processes to a GMP manufacturing environment.

Essential Criteria

  • Be educated to degree level or higher in a related scientific/technical discipline.
  • Have at least four years’ experience in pharmaceutical formulation, ideally in a CDMO environment.
  • Have excellent communication skills (written and verbal), and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to effectively contribute within a team environment and work on own initiative.
  • Understanding of safe working practices and risk assessment within laboratory settings.

Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding of API characterisation (material sciences, analytical techniques) to support development projects
  • Experience of working within a quality management system.
  • Working knowledge of GMP clinical manufacture.
